COMPUTER SCIENCE,TECH COMMUNITIES-THE EXPERIENCE SO FAR.

I was just a boy who was intrigued about computers. The name alone sounds heroic. When its mentioned, some sort of excitement is passed to my spine. You could envision such excitement back in the days when people shout for joy just because there is Nigerian NEPA light.

But as a fresher, things were not the same again. I became confused by what used to bring excitement to me. The excitements of being in the University, having a wonderful course, all died down. What happened?

1. I HAD NO CLUE OF WHAT I’M IN FOR

In movies fascinating things are done with computers and it looks so easy.In real life, you will hear such words as “You need to be a computer literate in this current world of ours” countless times. But the difficulty is just me not having a clue of what my course is all about or what is expected of me. I got frustrated the first year that I wished to graduate the first day I entered.

2. LECTURERS SEEMED TO BE HAPPY WITH THEIR JOBS

There were not so much real connection between the Lecturers and Students as to guide them in the path they have chosen. From the way they handled issues,it seemed they are just there to fulfil all righteousness. They were not really interested in the development of their students. Their minds are full of assumptions of what the students ought to know. Most of there actions are better described thus “I am just here for my pay”. But something happened?

TECH COMMUNITY

“No matter how rough the road is, there are still people that keeps moving-it has always been a few that makes the difference”. Towards the end of my sophomore year, I met few guys that raised my hopes.I was invited for a meet-up with OwerriDevC Facebook Developer Circles which gave me the opportunity of knowing that such groups existed in my own school.Without much delay,I subscribed to Google’s Developer Student Clubs where I was privileged to be a core-team-member.The most fascinating thing is that I was loved into it. I had no skills and they promised to help with that and they did. Finally I met people that cared for my development. And that is the prime of Tech communities. They care, teach, share and help you till you find your feet. Everything became clear to me from then onwards.I had a picture of what I wanted and what’s expected of me. And though I sounded bitter about my Lecturers but the experience also made me realize that they are doing their jobs. And there is no how they can be everything to us. To an Extent, they still have our interest at heart but not as much as Tech communities do.

To the likes of Ndubuisi Onyemenam and Amadi Austin Chukwuemeka, I am grateful to have met you guys. I haven’t been so much right now but time will tell.

JOIN A COMMUNITY NOW-THERE IS SO MUCH TO REAP!!!
